{"id":3838,"date":"2021-05-12T16:25:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T15:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/oeiras-integra-projeto-de-protecao-costeira-contra-o-aumento-de-riscos-climaticos\/"},"modified":"2021-07-14T15:58:10","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T14:58:10","slug":"oeiras-joins-a-project-to-protect-the-coast-against-increased-climate-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/en\/oeiras-joins-a-project-to-protect-the-coast-against-increased-climate-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"Oeiras joins a project to protect the coast against increased climate risks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"414\" src=\"http:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/160_zona_costeira-copy-1-1024x414.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/160_zona_costeira-copy-1-1024x414.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/160_zona_costeira-copy-1-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/160_zona_costeira-copy-1-768x310.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/160_zona_costeira-copy-1-1000x403.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/oeirasvalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/160_zona_costeira-copy-1.jpg 1446w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Oeiras is one of ten European Municipalities that integrate the SCORE (Smart Instant Monitoring and Control of the Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities) project, focused on protecting the coast against increased climate risks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oeiras.pt\/\">Municipality of Oeiras<\/a> will form part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsligo.ie\/research\/collaborative-projects\/score\/\">SCORE<\/a> (Smart Instant Monitoring and Control of the Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities) project, a European project focused on protecting the coast and enhancing resilience against increased climate risks, such as coastal flooding or erosion of natural coastal systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SCORE consortium, funded by the European <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/\">Horizon 2020<\/a> programme, aims to design, develop, monitor and validate robust adaptation measures on coasts and in low-lying areas, to protect them from increased climate risks and rising sea levels, thus seeking to enhance the resilience of those areas in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consortium intends to base its work on the co-design, co-development, deployment, testing and demonstration of innovative EBA (Ecosystem-Based Approaches), intelligent technologies and hybrid Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). For this, a network of ten laboratories will be established, involving the various stakeholders, designated as Coastal City Living Labs (CCLL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coastal City Living Labs will be trained to work on the projection of climate change and coastal erosion, in an attempt to arrange different mitigation measures. Coastal climate monitoring and the development of local early warnings will also be carried out, based on a network of smart, low-cost sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, the aim is to acquire and share evidence of the effectiveness of the EBA approach through a high-quality ICT platform, bolster the financial resilience of coastal cities through financial risk assessment tools, and support decision making in the municipal management of the coastal cities by developing similar digital prototypes to analyse optimal corrective actions for sustainable, equitable and cost-effective climate resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tecnico.ulisboa.pt\/pt\/\">Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico<\/a> and the Municipality of Oeiras will take on the task of mapping primary exposure and the risk of extreme climate impacts on coastal cities and also integrate the monitoring and warning system of the Coastal City Living Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oeiras.pt\/\">Municipality of Oeiras<\/a> will receive a contribution of 77,500 euros to support the development of this project, which will also take place in nine other cities in Ireland, Spain, Italy, Poland, Turkey and Slovenia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsligo.ie\/\">Institute of Technology Sligo<\/a>, in Ireland, will have total funding of 10 million euros, and will be formed by a consortium of twenty-eight high-level research and development organisations, ten local\/municipal management bodies, public sector research organisations, SME, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enoll.org\/\">ENOLL<\/a>, an international NGO experienced in the Living Lab approach.
