According to the specialists, the organ is responsible for storing and redistributing iron in the body, which prevents the body from succumbing to the invading parasite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These conclusions come from a study of 400 patients with malaria at Josina Machel Hospital in Angola, a country where the main cause of death is malaria. The results indicate that, when occurring simultaneously, acute renal failure and anemia considerably increase the risk of a patient\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-reports\/home\">Cell Reports<\/a>, the research has important implications for the prognosis of infected patients and the development of more effective and personalized targeted therapies, which may eventually put a brake on the number of malaria deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study resulted from a collaboration with Euclides Sacomboio, an Angolan researcher who joined the Inflammation group at IGC through the <a href=\"https:\/\/gulbenkian.pt\/en\/\">Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/gulbenkian.pt\/projects\/envolve-ciencia-palop\/\">ENVOLVE Ci\u00eancia PALOP<\/a>&#8221; program. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Instituto de Ci\u00eancias de Sa\u00fade, in Angola, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.i-med.ac.at\/universitaet\/index.html.en\">Medical University of Innsbruck <\/a>in Austria, the <a href=\"http:\/\/parcc.inserm.fr\/\">Paris Cardiovascular Center <\/a>(PARCC), in France, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.xjtu.edu.cn\/Home\/Schools\/The_First_Affiliated_Hospital.htm\">The First Affiliated Hospital<\/a>, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work of the Gulbenkian researchers was funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.pt\/\">Foundation for Science and<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.pt\/en\/\">Technology<\/a> (FCT), the <a href=\"https:\/\/gulbenkian.pt\/ciencia\/gulbenkian-collaborative-centre\/erc-oeiras\/\">Oeiras-ERC Frontier Research Incentive Awards<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacaolacaixa.pt\/pt\/\">La Caixa Foundation<\/a>\u00a0 and supported by the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/gulbenkian.pt\/projects\/envolve-ciencia-palop\/\">ENVOLVE Ci\u00eancia PALOP<\/a>&#8221; program.
