In close collaboration with the Oeiras City Council, the center aims not only to contribute to the progress of science, but also to the population’s education.
On October 24, the Católica Biomedical Research Centre was inaugurated on the campus of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) in Oeiras. The main goal of this new research center at Católica Medical School, the Faculty of Medicine from Universidade Católica Portuguesa, is to promote health through science, recognizing and enhancing the value of knowledge and innovation in the biomedical field.
The center’s strategic location at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência provides a privileged research environment, together with highly qualified resources.
In close collaboration with the Oeiras City Council, the center aims not only to contribute to the progress of science, but also to the population’s education. Católica Biomedical Research Centre intends to actively involve secondary school students and teachers, playing a crucial role in building scientific literacy skills.
The Municipality of Oeiras is supporting the construction of this research center by means of a EUR 1.6 million financial contribution. This amount will contribute to the creation of five properly equipped laboratories and the renovation of the interior coverings, as well as adjusting the electrical, water, sanitation and ventilation infrastructures, updating the air conditioning system and installing new furniture. Isaltino Morais, Mayor of Oeiras, explains that “this collaboration is yet another contribution to the affirmation of the municipal strategy for science and technology and proof that Oeiras continues to be the ideal municipality for attracting talent and knowledge in these areas”.
Católica Biomedical Research Centre represents a fundamental step for the future of biomedical research in Portugal, uniting the experience of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa with the excellence of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, and promising to bring significant advances in health promotion and in the progress of medical science in the country.
