Mayor of Oeiras
When I took office as Mayor of Oeiras at the end of 2017, one of the goals that I set out was to bring a new cycle of development for Oeiras.
The official launch of the Oeiras Valley project is a historic step towards the mission that we have set ourselves. Oeiras already hosts a large number of tech companies, located throught the municipality, and particularly in the business parks of Taguspark; Quinta da Fonte, Lagoas Park, Suécia Park, among others. We are the headquarters for research and development laboratories. We have infrastructures of excellence where business, scientific and technological parks stand out.
But we want more. We want to go further. We want to create conditions to make Oeiras the largest hub for the nurturing of innovation, creativity and technology in Portugal. We want Oeiras to be the next Silicon Valley, a place that attracts the best talent, the best ideas and the best technology. We want to make Oeiras, the country’s largest innovation ecosystem, favoring the set-up of companies in such fields as technology, pharmaceutical, nanotechnology and oceanographic research, stimulating job creation with high added value.
We aim to reach higher, to reach further. In order to achieve this, one of the axis of our development strategy is the internationalization of the Oeiras Valley brand, presenting the project in foreign markets, with the aim to bring more investment for the municipality.
This way, we will continue to focus on creating incentives to place Oeiras on the international business map and strengthen its position as an exporting municipality. To do so, we expect to invest up to EUR 400 million until 2026 in economic development, education, housing, the environment and territorial intelligence. We will continue to invest in Oeiras, to position it as one of the economic, social and human development hubs of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon and of the country.
An example of this growing dynamism is the investment of the municipality in the “Oeiras Education” program – a platform that links schools, families and the community in order to recognize the best students at national level. Along the same line we are also launching the “Agenda for Science”, based on three main areas: Education & Society, Innovation and Internationalization. The purpose of this program is to create an ambitious strategy involving society, universities and research institutes, as well as companies, to add science and technology as part of the identity of the Oeiras municipality.
In parallel, we have been developing and strengthening a cultural profile that places Oeiras as one of the most important cities in the field of arts, entertainment, innovation, cultural creativity in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon.
