Based on a population survey, the Municipality of Oeiras has developed plans outlining its main strategies for more sustainable and accessible transport systems in the next 10 years.
Increasing the proportion of people using public transportation to 36.4% and decreasing the emission of greenhouse gases by 20% – these are some of the goals set by the Municipality of Oeiras for the next decade in the Accessibility and Sustainable Mobility Plans and presented last April 3.
These plans were drawn up to define the main strategic lines of the municipality in the area of mobility and to establish goals to be reached in the next 10 years. Among the main goals, some of the highlights were to increase the proportional use of public transportation to 36.4%, to increase the proportional use of soft transportation to 24.9% and to reduce the proportional use of individual transport to 43%. In addition, the Municipality of Oeiras also intends to reduce the number of pedestrian collisions by 30%, the number of road accident victims by 30% and the emission of greenhouse gases by 20%.
The plan was developed based on a previous survey conducted among the population of Oeiras, making it possible to characterize the mobility patterns of the municipality’s residents and workers, as well as to prepare a transport model for Oeiras. Using the survey, it was possible to conclude that the preferred means of transport for the residents of Oeiras is still personal transport, 45% of people use cars. Only 31% choose public transportation and 20% travel on foot.
The event to present the plan was chaired by the Mayor of Oeiras, Isaltino Morais, and it was attended by the drafters of the plans: João Figueiredo de Sousa (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan), Fernando Nunes da Silva (Accessibility Plan) and Maria João Silveira (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan).
