The new “Atlantic” supercomputer will allow IPMA to significantly improve the quality of its weather forecasts as well as fire risk index forecasting.
On January 20, 2023, IPMA inaugurated “Atlantic”, the new High-Resolution Ocean Atmosphere Modeling System that will facilitate a 20-fold increase in the institute’s computational capacity.
According to IMPA president, Miguel Miranda, at the “Atlantic” inauguration session, the system funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) is crucial for the high-speed data processing required for mathematical climate modeling, which mimics complex real-world scenarios.
This new supercomputer will significantly improve weather forecast, forecast for marine meteorology, support for aeronautical meteorology and fire risk weather index quality and has applications in other areas.
António Costa Silva, the Minister of the Economy and Maritime Affairs, presided over the inauguration ceremony of the new “Atlantic” supercomputer and emphasized that this is the first stage of a broader plan to strengthen the collaborative network of ocean technologies. The other components of the plan are currently in the public procurement process. In total, EUR 243 million are available to invest in sea economy, 87 million of which will go towards blue economy hubs – sustainable infrastructures geared towards sea, including IPMA’s large hub.
