The Municipal Council of Oeiras approved the construction and installation of the new Laboratory of the CBR – Católica Biomedical Research Center in the library building of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC).
The municipality’s financial contribution results from a partnership with the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
With an investment of EUR 1,640,762.56, Oeiras strengthens itself as a scientific and technological ecosystem in close alignment with the Oeiras Science and Technology Strategy (EOCT) for 2020-2025.
The future biomedical research center will be integrated into the Católica Luz Clinical Academic Centre of Católica Medical School, and it promises to continue its contribution to medical innovation in our country.
Particularly when it comes to fundamental science in biology, it will positively impact the Open Science program in Oeiras, complementing the initiatives already promoted by the IGC and the António Xavier Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB Nova).
This project, which involves the complete adaptation of the 3rd floor in IGC’s library for the construction of five labs, should be completed within 4 months.
Afterwards, and over the course of four years, seven actions will be developed, in line with the three cornerstones of Católica Medical School – teaching, research and clinical activity:
- “I am STEAM: Academic Literacy Program”,
- “Minde Dates: Mentorship Program for pre-university students”,
- “Job Shadowing: Who does Science?”,
- “Scientific Illustration Workshop”,
- “Hands-on & Minds-on: Experimental kits for secondary school students”,
- “Coffee with Health – Health Education Seminars”,
- “TRAILBLAZER Lectures on Global Challenges”.
The scientific and technological positioning of the Palácio do Marquês campus and the Oeiras Valley brand is thus strengthened, and the long-term value the project will bring to the municipality and to national and international medical innovation is invaluable.
