Oeiras is the fifth Portuguese municipality with the highest business density, which highlights its capacity to attract investment. The latest data made available by the National Statistical Institute (INE), the figures for 2018, show that 24,653 non-financial companies were established in the municipality of Oeiras, representing a business density of 537.3 companies per square kilometre. This figure is more than 38 times the national average, which is 13.9 companies per square kilometre, and more than quadruples the figure for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area as a whole, which is 121.6.
The Oeiras City Council defined attracting and maintaining companies as one of their main objectives, creating conditions so that companies can settle in the municipality and develop their activity in the best way.
According to Statistics Portugal, the number of companies (excluding sole proprietors and self-employed workers) established in Oeiras grew by 16.3% between 2009 and 2018, to 9,482. The movement of the “consulting, scientific and technical activities” sector stands out, with a growth of 23.3%, to 1,649 companies, but also the “education” sector, with an increase of 20%, to 185, and also the “information and communication” sector, with a jump of one third, to 693 companies. Together, they show how their objective, of focusing on attracting technology-based companies, has been fulfilled.
In order to attract investment, Oeiras is committed to the implementation of world-class infrastructures and the promotion of a unique ecosystem, especially in the areas of science and technology, with aspects in the areas of education and research and development, supported by a culture for the promotion of science and technological literacy. This ecosystem allows companies that become established in the municipality to benefit from reception areas, support services, the framework provided by companies that are already established in Oeiras and that are part of this trend-setting ecosystem, and also the availability of highly qualified human capital.
