The Oeiras International Poetry Biennial starts on 16 November.
The event, which forms part of Oeiras’ bid to become European Capital of Culture 2027, will bring over 100 guests from 3 continents, and will feature Sérgio Godinho, Simone de Oliveira, Miguel Araújo, António Zambujo and Mário Vargas Llosa, among many other figures.
This 1st biennial, which is free of charge and open to the public, will have power and democracy as its main theme.
From conversation concerts to workshops, lectures to the theatre, the biennial aims to celebrate poetry in its different forms of expression, taking advantage of the strong connection of the county of Oeiras with this area of the arts, demonstrated through venues such as Parque dos Poetas, the Templo da Poesia and the strong network of Municipal Libraries.
Given the capacity of the rooms, entry to the sessions will be limited via the booking of tickets. Bookings may be made online from 8 November.
Booking tickets guarantees priority entry to the sessions, but for the tickets to be valid, you must arrive at the event 30 minutes before the session starts.
The 1st Poetry Biennial, a partnership between The Book Company and the City Council, emerges from Oeiras’ focus on poetry as one of the fronts of its bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2027.
On World Poetry Day, in March, there were 24 hours of programmes dedicated to poetry in Oeiras, and in June, the Exhibition of Word Arts festival.
Among various other initiatives, the Oeiras digital radio station dedicated to poetry – poesia.fm – should launch soon.
